Mary Harlan
Mary started working outside in 1999 for the Park Service as a Backcountry and Climbing Ranger for Mt. Rainier and Olympic National Parks, and as a backpacking guide in Jackson Hole, WY, after a short, but exciting career as a ballet dancer. It was after she quit ballet in 1998 that Mary decided to participate in an Outward Bound Semester Course, where she learned her true passions were in the outdoors.
Since 2002, Mary has guided snowboarding and skiing in the mountains of Colorado and Washington States, alpine climbing throughout the Western U.S., Alaska, and Canada, rock climbing throughout the Western U.S., Canada, and Mexico, and has developed her interests in nutrition, watercolor painting, yoga, and natural history.
Although she loves all aspects of guiding and playing outside, her passion for climbing includes anything that goes up—“I love to run uphill, skin uphill… If it goes up, I love it! But, the thrill of skiing and snowboarding in powder… There’s nothing like it!”
Mary is AIARE Level II Avalanche Certified, is AIARE Level I Instructor Certified, is American Association of Snowboard Instructors Level I Certified, an AMGA Rock Guide Aspirant and an AMGA trained Alpine Guide, is a Wilderness First Responder, and a Leave No Trace Trainer. In her spare time she studies astrology, paints, runs, and cooks really good food.

Sheldon Kerr
Hey ya'll. Here's a little info on me. I'm an AMGA trained ski guide with six years under my belt leading backcountry and ski mountaineering trips in Utah, Alaska and Colorado -the three places I call home. My alpine climbing and expedition guiding includes high-altitude peaks in Argentina, Tanzania and Alaska as well as 24-day instructional ski-mountaineering and mountaineering courses. Winter finds me patrolling and guiding at Silverton Mountain and Crested Butte. I teach AIARE (American Institute of Avalanche Research and Education) curriculum as a qualified instructor and am a competitive extreme skier. I'm an EMT, an aquarius and currently hold subscriptions to Wooden Boat, The New Yorker and Alpinist magazines.
Why Babes?
Woman are rad. They are fun and goofy, spirited and lively, determined and strong. There are few pleasures in life greater than simply spending time in the company of women. In fact, the only comparable pleasure is skiing. It follows that skiing with women is about the best thing going. Put just one woman in a group of skiers and all of a sudden, the tour becomes more fun, more safe and more rewarding. Get a crew of gals together and you're destined to have a good time. And wait, there's more! Empowering women to be better skiers, riders, bikers and avalanche-decision-makers gives our participants boosts of both confidence and ability in whatever they do, on or off the slopes. I work for Babes in the Backcountry because it seamlessly combines the two things in life that mean the most to me, great gals and great turns.
